Step 1: Know what your goals are
Know what your goals are. Because PSAT scores determine qualification for the prestigious National Merit competition, your primary focus should be to qualify. To qualify, you must score in the top 1 percentile of your state. In recent years, that ranged anywhere from 200 to 225 depending on your state and year.To see an estimate of what score you might need in your state, (click here). Remember that the qualifying score varies from year to year, so make sure to get 5 to 10 points above the qualifying score.
However, because you ultimate goal is not simply to qualify but to be recognized as a finalist or win other scholarships, you should aim for the highest possible score.
