Sophomore Year

Most people take the PSAT for practice during their sophomore year. Make sure to sign up so you can take the test under actual conditions and see what you would get if the real PSAT were today. More importantly, don’t just walk in unprepared. A primary benefit of taking the PSAT your sophomore year is that it motivates you to start studying and gives you an idea of where you are at. Not studying squanders that valuable opportunity.

The single most important test of high schools is probably the SAT or ACT. These tests are generally considered to be the primary college admission exams. Again, don’t wait until later to start studying. Do it now. Studying for the SAT will also help with your PSAT studying, so you’ll be killing two birds with one stone.

Start looking for a job and/or an internship. Both are good experiences as well as resume builders. Plus, it never hurts with a job or paid internship to have a little extra cash.

Because you still won’t be completely bogged down with work your sophomore year, try to take at least one AP examination. Taking a couple tests per year is better than trying to take eight AP tests all at one time. If you are not taking any AP courses, find a subject that you won’t be taking an AP preparation class for later in high school and self-study for that exam. Having more AP tests under your belt is a great credential and will win you AP recognition awards.

It is important that you not only participate in a host of activities, but also that you excel in them. One of the best ways to do that is to assume leadership positions. These show a higher level of commitment as well as your ability to lead.

Look into camps or summer programs for the upcoming summer. These are usually great experiences that also serve to give you a better idea of your interests while building your resume. Many have deadlines in the spring and fill up fast, so begin looking as soon as possible.

Search and compete for scholarships. There are thousands of scholarships offered every year, most of which require a simple application and essay to compete in. Improve your writing abilities, explore interesting topics, win accomplishments for your resume, and earn money at the same time.
