Choosing a Major

Choosing a major in college is a relatively simple task once you have decided on a major. For many career paths, the major choice is rigidly obvious. It makes sense for most aspiring doctors to follow a pre-med track and most aspiring professors to study the fields they want to teach later on. Still, there are many cases in which a major choice might not be so clear.

First, even if you know what career path you want to go into, you still have a range of relevant major choices to choose from. Aspiring doctors can take pre-med or biology or chemistry etc. Aspiring businessmen can take one of many fields or business, or economics, or economics/mathematics. Most career paths have no specified major or even field of majors at all. Moreover, it is possible to take combinations of majors, joint majors, majors with specific concentrations, or even a major completely unrelated to your intended career path. For example, students aspiring for law or medicine or business can take any major for their undergraduate degree and still study independently for their career or graduate school.

Second, if you don’t know what career path you want to go into, your range of major choices is completely open. Generally, you should find a major in a field that you are interested in or are considering pursuing a career in. Other options are to try interdisciplinary studies or joint programs between multiple subjects that you are interested in. Always keep in mind when choosing a major that you want to have a viable career path in the future.

Remember, you can always change your major during college.
