What to include:
1. Heading
Begin with a heading (this doesn’t have to be labeled):
- Your full legal name (If you have a strange foreign name and you have a name you go by, include it in parentheses)
- Home Address
- Email address (make sure you have a professional email, avoid hotblonde@aol.com)
- Phone Number
2. Objective (optional)
Clearly state what it is you want to achieve.3. Education/Academics
Third, include an “Education” or “Academics” section:- List of high schools that you have attended
- Include your GPA if it is above 3.0
- (Optional: include class rank, including the total number of students in your class, if noteworthy)
- Mention academic awards/honors (can be put under the awards section instead)
- Mention course rigor
**if this is an application for an internship or a job, include “Relevant Course Material”
- List out relevant classes or tests.
- Example: If you are applying for a science internship, you may want to list the math and science classes you took and any science or math AP tests/SAT IIs you took plus the grades you got.
4. Experience
Here is where you list work experience that has taught you valuable skills. You can choose to split this section into two parts – “Work Experience” and “Research Experience”.- Include the dates you worked there and your duties/responsibilities.
- Put in order from most recent down.
If you don’t have work experience, don’t include this section.
5. Extracurricular Activities
Here is where you list activities, clubs, volunteer work, leadership positions, and special skills (only include high school).Optional – you can split this section into multiple parts. i.e. – “Activities”, “Clubs”, “Sports”, “Community Service”, “Research”, etc.
6. References
You may want to talk to some teachers, coaches, mentors, etc., so that you have a readily available list of people to list under references (get a number to list that they can be reached out and list their relation to you).However, you can also put “References Available Upon Request” as a temporary measure.
